Climate Crisis and Geoengineering: Beyond COP30

Climate Crisis and Geoengineering: Beyond COP30

Rationale

The climate crisis has opened the door to a range of technological proposals that aim to preserve the capitalist system through modifications that do not question the root causes of the problem. Among these are climate manipulation or geoengineering. These initiatives —such as solar radiation management, ocean alkalinization, or carbon capture and storage— are embedded in the same logic of extraction, dispossession, and violence that produced the climate crisis in the first place. This session seeks to demystify technological neutrality and highlight the ecological, social, and political risks of these interventions. The goal is to foster reflection on how these false solutions divert attention away from the structural transformations that are truly needed.
