This session will explore the concept of Degrowth along with the authors of the latest book 'Exploring Degrowth' which shows why degrowth could be compelling project for certain parts of world. The Degrowth movement demands that we slow down the economy by transforming our economies, our politics and our culture to live within the Earth’s limits. The discussion will address the practice and strategies of the movement, looking at its strengths and weaknesses.

About the the presenters

Vincent Liegey

Vincent Liegey is an engineer; interdisciplinary researcher; spokesperson for the French and international degrowth movements; co-author of Un Projet de Décroissance: Manifeste pour une Dotation Inconditionelle d’Atonomie [Degrowth Project: Manifesto for an Unconditional Autonomy Allowance] (2013); coordinator of Cargonomia — a centre for research and experimentation on degrowth, social cooperative for sustainable logistical solutions and local food distribution using cargo-bikes in Budapest; and a coordinator of the Support Group for international degrowth conferences.

Anitra Nelson

Anitra Nelson is an activist-scholar, Associate Professor and Honorary Principal Fellow at the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute, University of Melbourne (Australia). Research interests centre on sustainable futures and non-monetary economies. She is the author of Small is Necessary: Shared Living on a Shared Planet (2018) and co-edited Life Without Money: Building Fair and Sustainable Economies (2011), Housing for Degrowth: Principles, Practices, Challenges and Opportunities (2018) and Food for Degrowth: Perspectives and Practices (forthcoming 2020).
